The journal
Your chapter and objective sit at the top left. The objective changes as you go, and when a chapter needs several things it often lists the ones still missing. Tap Open Journal to read the whole story so far.
The map
Tap the map in the corner, or Open Map if you play with Compact HUD, to see the whole of it. Three marks can appear on it:
- A blue cross: where the story goes next. It marks the next place you haven't been that is open to you, beside somewhere you have.
- A red cross: an optional errand. See below.
- A pale blue ring: someone you have already met is waiting for you to come back. Something you did has earned you what they are holding. Go and talk to them.
No cross at all usually means what you need is somewhere you have already been: someone to talk to again, or something still to pick up or look at.
Locked doors
A door that won't open yet says what it is waiting for, and your hero reads it aloud.
You can't lock yourself out
Nothing you do, and no order you do things in, can stop you finishing a book. A wrong answer to a puzzle can be tried again. Several of the big choices let you say not yet, and wait until you come back.
Side errands
In each of the first three books, a traveller you meet in the first chapter may ask a favour. It is optional, and a red cross marks where it is. When it is done, go back to her: a ring marks her, and she pays you then. Whatever you find on the way is yours to keep. She doesn't need it back.
Leaving a book
Press Back and the game offers to put the book back on the shelf. Your place in it is kept for when you return.
